Introduction
When you think about what goes into your skincare or makeup, “water” might sound simple. But in cosmetic formulation, not all water is created equal. The type of water used can make or break your product’s performance, safety, and shelf life. At Cheekbone Beauty, we’re intentional about every ingredient and that includes the water.
💧 The Role of Water in Cosmetics
Water is one of the most common ingredients in beauty products. It acts as a solvent, helping dissolve other ingredients like humectants, active botanicals, and emulsifiers. It also gives products that lightweight, hydrating feel we all love.
But here’s the catch: ordinary tap water contains minerals, salts, and sometimes microorganisms that can spoil your formula or destabilize sensitive ingredients. That’s why professional formulations rely on purified water systems to ensure consistency, safety, and product longevity.
🧪 Distilled vs. Deionized Water: What’s the Difference?
Distilled Water:
This type of water has been boiled into steam and condensed back into liquid, leaving behind metals, salts, and most contaminants. It’s exceptionally clean, free from bacteria, viruses, and minerals that could interfere with your formulation.
Deionized Water:
Deionized water is filtered through ion-exchange resins that remove charged particles (ions) like calcium, sodium, and chloride. The process removes salts and often, harmful organic compounds producing a water that’s extremely pure and stable for cosmetic use.
Both types ensure the formula stays effective and safe helping your products last longer and feel smoother on your skin.
⚠️ Why Not Tap Water?
Tap water can contain chlorine, fluoride, metals, and microorganisms that degrade formulas over time. Even a few drops of untreated water can shorten a product’s shelf life or cause bacterial growth. That’s why our lab never uses it and why your DIY formulas or refills should also use purified water.
