We are so excited to share our Sustainability Report that provides an overview of our social and environmental impact. It highlights our sustainability performance in 2021 and 2022 as well as future goals we have set for ourselves that we will revisit and modify each year. We believe that being transparent and accountable is key in achieving our sustainability goals.
In our first sustainability report, we aimed to provide accurate and reliable data. As part of this initiative, we established a baseline for tracking our progress over the years.
Moving forward we will be looking towards preparing our reports in alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards.

OUR SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSPARENCY
Integrity and Honesty are two of Cheekbone Beauty’s core values. We pride ourselves for being radically transparent about our business, partners and especially our ingredients. In addition to the efforts below, we are always researching new ways to continue our sustainability journey to respect people and planet.
CLEAN BEAUTY STANDARDS
Feel safe knowing our products are created without harmful or controversial ingredients. For the complete list of our Biinad Beauty Standards, which includes ingredients that we’ve removed or restricted from our products, view here.
We created these standards based on both scientific evidence, as well as potential human and environmental impacts.
We source our ingredients from manufacturers that can prove they respect the environment and provide good working conditions for their employees. We only use ingredients that are/meet:
- Fair Trade
- Not tested on animals
- Meet the Clean + Planet Positive standards set forth by Sephora Canada
We also measure ingredients against our in-house Biinad Beauty Standards.
All of our packaging meets one or more of the following sustainability standards:
- Plantable (seed paper)
We are also working with Canopy as a Pack4Good brand partner, see our agreement here.
TRANSPORTATION AND SHIPPING
Items coming from manufacturers overseas are sent by boat rather than air when possible. When shipping to our online customers, we use mailers that are recyclable, and/or come from 100% recycled materials.
If you follow Cheekbone Beauty, you know that we are working hard to make big changes in the way develop and sell products in addition to empowering Indigenous youth. We are committed to creating as little waste as we can and hope that you will follow along on this journey with us.
We like to look at sustainability a little differently. In today’s economic climate, the highest-standard of sustainability is reached when a product and/or service meets the needs of today without compromising the ability of the next generation to fulfill their needs. The concept is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people. What makes us special is that our sustainability journey embodies the strengths of Western Culture and Indigenous Wisdom, also known as Two-Eyed Seeing. Termed by Mi’kmaq elder Dr.Albert Marshall, this concept nurtures the strengths of Western science and Indigenous knowledge for the benefit of living things and our environment. In addition, we honour and practice the 7th Generation Principle derived by the Iroquois People to not only leave enough for the next generation, but to leave enough for our children in the next seven generations.
Keeping in line with our founders Anishinaabe roots, Cheekbone Beauty is developing products that only take what is needed.
As part of our sustainability journey, we are constantly rethinking packaging that meets the needs of balance and take. This includes packaging that is refillable, recyclable, compostable or biodegradable. In March of 2023, we've also introduced refillable lipglosses and lipsticks into our assortment, which is aimed at reducing the amount of packaging that ends up in landfills.
Cheekbone Beauty has a diverse and inclusive workforce. We are a proud BIPOC founded and owned company using Indigenous languages and training and development programs for all employees.
