FROM LAND TO LIPS
At Cheekbone Beauty, all our SUSTAIN Lipsticks are named after the word for “land”, “earth”, or “ground” in different Indigenous languages. For example, our Aki lipstick is named after the word for “land” in Founder and CEO, Jenn Harper’s, Anishinaabemowin language.
Indigenous peoples have navigated and lived off the land for thousands of years. At Cheekbone Beauty, we honour our Indigenous roots by only taking what is needed from the land while crafting our sustainable, colour cosmetics. We nurture our relationship with the land and its resources, as we believe all things in nature are interconnected. This is referred to as the 7th Generation Principle, derived from the Iroquois people, which suggests that we not only leave enough for the next generation, but to leave enough for the next seven.

Returning To The Land

Indigenous people are the OGs of sustainability. While sustainability, protecting the environment, and social responsibility are big drivers in business, these are things we would have done regardless.
Our commitments to people and planet are deeply rooted in Indigenous worldviews and concepts such as Two-Eyed Seeing, which nurtures the strengths of Western science and Indigenous wisdom for the benefit of living things in our environment, as well as the 7th Generation Principle.

As a brand, we have managed to intertwine innovation and sustainability to rethink and repurpose the resources that we have, to craft new ideas without creating waste.
However, our sustainability journey is never over, and we will continue to innovate and find new ways to make our products and packaging as sustainable and clean as possible. For example, the packaging for our SUSTAIN Lipsticks is comprised of biodegradable vegetable ink and other naturally, sustainably sourced materials which keeps our componentry out of landfills.
We also provide customers with a “Thank You” card in their orders, made of seed paper to be planted, which will then grow wildflowers.

At Cheekbone Beauty, we are also associated with organizations such as Pact Collective, 1% For the Planet, and B.Corp.
These certifications show our commitment to people and planet. Our B.Corp certification was an extremely lengthy and extensive process, and is a legal obligation we have willingly taken on. It is proof of our commitment to people and planet so that our youth can see their potential in any avenues that they may wish to pursue.
We encourage you to plant the seed card that you receive in your order and enjoy the beautiful wildflowers that will grow from it. Miigwech!
